Is the Birds of Paradise Font Free for Commercial Use?

The short version: the free download is for personal use only. Here is exactly what that covers, what it doesn't, and what to do if you need it for business.

Quick answer

No. The free Birds of Paradise font is licensed for personal use only. You can use it for your own wedding invitations, school projects and personal social posts, but any business use (logos, products, packaging, websites, books, videos, paid events or client work) needs a commercial license bought from Herofonts at herofonts.com/license.

What the license file actually says

The demo download from Herofonts ships with a one-page license image (PERSONAL-USE-ONLY.png). It is short and fairly clear. In Herofonts' own words, if you are running a business and using the font, you need a commercial licence. Allowed with the free version: • Personal artwork such as invitations and posters for your own use • School work • Images made with the font on your personal Facebook, Instagram or X account, as long as you are not posting for a company Not allowed without a commercial license: • Designing a product, a magazine or any kind of packaging • Using it on the web if you run a business • Using it for an event such as a concert or any paid event • Using it in a book, ebook or video • Using it on social media if you represent a company

Real-life examples

Your own wedding invitations, printed at home or at a print shop: personal use, fine. A birthday banner for your kid's party: personal, fine. A school presentation or design-class assignment: fine. Invitations you sell on Etsy: commercial. You need a license. A logo for your bakery, salon or Instagram shop: commercial. A t-shirt, mug or tote bag you sell, including print-on-demand: commercial. YouTube thumbnails or video titles on a monetized channel: the license names video and business use, so treat this as commercial. A book cover, even a self-published Kindle ebook: the license names books and ebooks specifically, so this is commercial. A design you make for a paying client: commercial, and the client may also need its own license depending on how they use it.

How to get a commercial license

Commercial licenses are sold by the foundry, Herofonts, not by font download sites. Go to herofonts.com/license, check which license fits (desktop, web, app and so on) and buy it there. Keep the receipt; if a client or a marketplace ever asks, it is your proof. We don't list prices here because they can change. Check the Herofonts site for the current price.

What if I already used it commercially?

Buy the license now. That is the simplest fix, and it's cheaper than a takedown notice. If the design is already printed, or already up on a marketplace, contact Herofonts and explain. Foundries generally prefer a sale to a dispute.

Need a free font you can use commercially?

If budget is the issue, there are script fonts with a similar feel that are free for commercial use under the SIL Open Font License, such as Great Vibes, Allura and Alex Brush. See our list of Birds of Paradise alternatives for side-by-side notes.
