What It Looks Like

Key Features

View Full Typography Specimen
01

Big looping capitals

The uppercase letters carry most of the personality. Their swashes swing well above the cap height, so a single capital often works as a monogram on its own.

02

Connected, slanted lowercase

Lowercase letters lean forward and join on the baseline, so a word reads like one continuous pen stroke rather than separate letters.

03

Thick-and-thin strokes

Hairline upstrokes sit next to heavy downstrokes, the way a pointed nib behaves when you press harder on the way down. Those hairlines are also why the font falls apart at small sizes.

04

Long ascenders and descenders

Letters like b, d, f, g and y reach far above and below the line. Give multi-line text extra line-height (around 1.4 or more) or the loops will collide.

Usage Guidance

Where Birds of Paradise Excels

Where it works well, and what the free license allows.

Wedding invitations & save-the-dates

Couple names, "Save the Date" headers and place cards. This is where the font gets used most.

Note: Free if the invitations are for your own wedding. A stationery shop selling them needs a commercial license.

Monograms & name designs

Initials, name signs, gift tags and framed prints for your home.

Note: The capitals are decorative enough to stand alone. Selling the result counts as commercial use.

Tattoo lettering

Names, dates and short words, set large enough for the hairlines to survive.

Note: Keep it at least 5–6 cm wide; very thin strokes can blur as a tattoo ages.

Is Birds of Paradise free?

It is free for personal use only, for things like your own wedding invitations, school work and personal social posts. Business use needs a commercial license from Herofonts.

Only after buying a commercial license at herofonts.com/license. Logos, products, packaging, business websites, books, videos and client work all count as commercial.

Where can I download Birds of Paradise safely?

The font file contains 260 glyphs covering 256 characters: A–Z, a–z, punctuation and accented Latin letters for most Western and Central European languages. In the free version the digits 0–9 (and ¹ ² ³ ¼ ½ ¾) show the Herofonts logo instead of numbers.

Yes. It is not built into either, but you can upload the .ttf to Canva on a paid plan, and Cricut Design Space can use it once it is installed on your computer.
